GA lawmakers ban minors from buying 'e-cigarettes'

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia lawmakers have voted to keep so-called e-cigarettes out of the hands of minors.

The bill approved Thursday would impose a $300 fine on any retailer who sells the noncombustible nicotine alternatives to anyone younger than 18. Meanwhile, any minor who buys, tries to buy or otherwise possesses the products would face up to 20 hours of community service.

The proposal stems from the increased popularity of the alternative cigarettes. The products offer would-be smokers a way to consume nicotine without lighting up or chewing tobacco.

Senators approved the ban unanimously Thursday, the final day of the General Assembly's 2014 session.

The bill now goes to Gov. Nathan Deal for his consideration.
