New music school coming to Detroit with $3M boost

Posted: Updated:

A new music school is coming to Detroit.

The Detroit Institute of Music Education has been formed with the help of $3 million from a private equity firm.

Quicken Loans founder and Chairman Dan Gilbert hosted a media open house Thursday. FOX 2's Erika Erickson was there.

The school will be led by Kevin Nixon, Sarah Clayman and Bruce Dickinson, who successfully launched a similar school in the United Kingdom. The Detroit Institute of Music Education will have classes in guitar, bass, vocals, drums, songwriting and music entrepreneurship.

Nixon tells Erickson the "positivity" and the "upswing" in downtown Detroit has astounded him.

A public open house is planned for Friday at the school's temporary admissions space.
