Baby Gorilla Recovers After Battling Illness

Posted: Updated:

A baby gorilla at the San Diego Zoo's Safari Park, is doing a lot better after battling pneumonia.

The eight-day-old gorilla is now able to breathe on her own and she is even drinking infant formula.

The gorilla still has around-the-clock care but officials believe her troubles could be a thing of the past.

"She's really doing well on the formula. She's getting a lot of calories now and we can see that. She changes every day and she's developing normally and very rapidly," explains Associate Director of Veterinary Services, Nadine Lamberski.

The baby gorilla's mother had an emergency cesarean section. It was the first time veterinarians at the zoo performed a C-section on a gorilla.

The eighteen-year-old is recovering in her familiar habitat at the zoo.
