Mudslide First Responders Save A Four Year Old's Life

Posted: Updated:

The images of the devastation surrounding this massive landslide in Washington are overwhelming to say the least but one image in particular has struck the hearts of many.

Pierce County Fire and Rescue first responder, Ed Hrivnak, recalls, "the crew chief said look there's a little kid out there in the mud it caught us all by surprise."

If a picture is worth a thousand words then maybe this picture is worth a million.

He continues, "He was stuck he was sunk into that mud so well that his pants came right off. The mud had compacted around him and created such suction that he couldn't move."

This photo was taken by first responders just moments after they saved the life of a child.

"They brought him to us in the ambulance. I took all his clothes off because he was freezing wrapped him up and told him I was a grandma," says the little boy's neighbor, Robin Youngblood.

Robin says the child's three siblings and father are among the victims still missing.

Hrivnak explains, "they couldn't find the rest of his family."

Robin says she comforted the child until his mother arrived at the hospital.

As for the crew that saved the boy's life, they're thankful for being able to save him.

It gives them hope to carry on.

"That little guy was quite the trooper he was a real inspiration to the whole crew," says Hrivnak.
