Potholes slowing ambulances around Southfield

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) - "I have been in emergency services almost 36 years and this year is one of the worst years," says Southfield Fire Chief Keith Rowley.

His department treats and transports patients, and that's growing more difficult these days because of the roads riddled with potholes.

"Any extra movement or jarring of an injured patient could further exasperate their condition," says Rowley.

Many of their rocky routes end at Providence Hospital, an area many FOX 2 viewers have complained about because of the surrounding potholes.

"[The paramedics] assess the patient and, if a patients condition allows them to take a route that is not filled with potholes, they're going to take a smoother route," says Rowley.

Many municipalities have exceeded or come close to exceeding their budgets because of this year's rough winter. FOX 2's Robin Murdoch reports the maintenance costs for emergency response crews has also increased because of the wear and tear on the vehicles.

Rowley says multiple shock and spring assemblies have been replaced. A tire on an engine was also recently replaced, believed to have been caused by a potholes.

A spokesperson for Providence says hospital employees are constantly keeping an eye on the condition of the roads near the hospital.

We're told the city of Southfield has an aggressive plan to patch the roads, which includes crews on 12-hours shifts and several resurfacing projects.
