Bridgeport residents, businesses brace for possible heliport

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It's the talk in the bakeries and beauty shops in Bridgeport.

Chicago Helicopter Express hopes to set up on the shore of the Chicago River, near the CTA's Orange Line and the Stevenson Expressway.

Chicago Helicopter Express plans to build sound barrier walls, a hangar and a terminal on unused industrial land. It will have 14 launch pads, plus a water taxi stop.

Helicopter tours would run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., lifting off from Bridgeport, flying over the Stevenson toward Lake Michigan.

It would also create 50 jobs and bring tourists to the South Side but some say it will also bring noise and danger to the neighborhood. Bridgeport business owners and residents are firmly planted on both sides of the issue.

Rosario Scalise has a construction company across the river. He's concerned about helicopters taking off and landing over his business every day.

Shawn Ramos lives near the site and says he's eager to see the terminal and helicopters outside his window.

The city's Plan Commission approved it. The Zoning Committee will hear from both sides, then it will go to the full City Council. If approved, it could be the first new aviation operation in Chicago since Meigs Field closed in 2003.
