NY budget deal gives boost to charter schools

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

It appears the charter school campaigning has worked. From the rallies to the commercials and ads blasting Mayor Bill de Blasio for saying charter schools get preference over traditional public schools.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is running for reelection this year, has apparently worked a deal the with the Senate and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to give academically successful charter schools more money for students and, for the first time, money to pay rent in private buildings if there is nothing available in public schools.

Success Academy's charter schools including founder Eva Moskowitz did not return our calls asking for a comment. At the NYC Charter School Center no one would speak on camera until a final deal is signed. The center did release a statement that welcomed a more money for charter schools but noted "we are profoundly disappointed that Speaker Silver did nothing to help out the students attending charter schools in private space."

Even more disappointed is the anti-charter, pro-traditional public school groups.

This tentative deal would give an extra $1,100 for each charter school pupil. Now charter schools like Girls' Prep here on the Lower East Side get roughly one-third what a regular school gets.

De Blasio's office had no comment until there is a completed deal, but it appears New York City will get $300 million from state funds to pay for his program of universal pre-kindergarten for city kids.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
