Torre Big and Tall Menswear Set To Close Its Doors

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH PHILADELPHIA -

It's the end of an era for a South Philadelphia landmark. Torre Big and Tall is set to close its doors after dressing men for decades, including some of the city's biggest sports legends.

Fox29's Dave Kinchen takes us through the history, and tells us what led to the owner's emotional decision to close.

Those dashing suits, sharp shirts and all the accessories have made Torre Big and Tall on Broad a South Philly staple for years.

Business wear for larger men with style.

"Really, this is my life's work. Torre is my life's work," store owner Mark Rosenfeld said.

Rosenfeld has been running the store since he was 17-years-old.

Now his decades of fashion are now down to a precious few days, following his decision to shut down after the death of his wife.

"She was an important part of our business and after her passing; I need to spend more time with our family," Rosenfeld said.

The groundwork laid by his grandfather as Rosenfeld and Cohen in 1937.

"We had 300 employees making men's suits," Rosenfeld said, "They switched an Italian name to fit South Philly."

And the franchise would go on to attract legendary names in entertainment and sports, many enshrined in the store's Wall of Fame.

"From Alan Iverson who just had his jersey retired to Reggie White who is a great personal friend and Wilt Chamberlain, we had all types of football players,"Rosenfeld shared.

But he says times have changed, which means he has as well.

"In this world the big box people are getting big and there's probably going to be two or three people that do each industry, two or three left," Rosenfeld said.

So it's hard for him to say goodbye to a staff that's been so loyal, including Taylor Jack Musallam who is saying farewell after 35 years on the job.

Rosenfeld says it's difficult leaving his life's work, but keeps the future wide open.

"Maybe, I'll go on to something else that's rewarding. I'm welcome to do that challenge," Rosenfeld said.

Torre will begin special sales on April 7th with some items as much as 50% off.

A portion of the sales will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

It was cancer that claimed Rosenfeld's wife.
