Oh boy, the anti-Granholm mob will have fun with this.  They are talking in California about running the former Michigan governor for something as part of the “new generation” of D’s on the west bank.

It’s really a shame that the real world is not paying attention to the U.S. Senate race because the two camps are passionately engaged in a war of news releases, we-thought—you-should-know email alerts to the media, and a never ending back and forth as they scratch for some advantage in this bitter battle to replace Carl Levin.

LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) - In real estate it’s location, location, location.

In politics it’s turnout, turnout, turnout.

And on that front during an off election year, that means the Democrats are sucking wind.

At this read, the Republicans are feeling pretty cocky.  They have successfully bush-whacked Democratic U.S. Senate Candidate Gary Peters with his Obamacare vote.  And they will continue to ride that issue until they run out of money or the issue runs out of gas and neither seems likely at this read.

Over in the governor’s race the R’s are also feeling even more cocky.  Everybody knows it’s tough to beat a sitting governor and since Mark Schauer voted for Obamacare in Congress, the broad brush they are using on Mr. Peters will be used on Mr. S. too.

On the other hand, both of these races have gotten closer and you can’t count Mr. Schauer or Mr. Peters out even though the Rs would have you believe that.

Lon Johnson is not a believer. He’s the Democratic Party chair and in a forum with his “buddy” Bobby Schostak, his GOP counterpart, the other day he admitted that Democrats often find something else to do on election day when the president is not on the ballot.

But rest assured he is doing something about it.  He reveals for the first time that he’s already made a dozen contacts with 990,000 Democrats who did not show up two years ago and by default they helped to elect one Rick Snyder governor.

That’s a ton of no-shows and there is no guarantee that Mr. Johnson can work his magic to motivate these folks to get in the game in November.  Emailing them to vote is one thing.  Getting them to the polls is quite another.

And Mr. Schostak is pretty confident Mr. Johnson can’t pull it off as the GOP chair predicts the turnout will be about normal for the off year i.e. somewhere around 3.2 or 3.3 million.

Mr. Johnson forecasts a more robust 3.7 million and if he is right and the extra 400,000 are his troops, Mr. Snyder will be looking for a new job.

Republicans don’t appear to be worried, but then neither was Democratic Gov. Jim Blanchard at this point many moons ago just before challenger John Engler sent him to the showers.
