Detroit teams with OnStar, others to fight car theft

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - The Detroit Police Department announced Wednesday a partnership with General Motors, OnStar, the United States Attorney General Office and H.E.A.T. (Help Eliminate Auto Thefts) in efforts to decrease the number of carjackings and auto thefts in the city.

The partnership with OnStar will help police track a stolen or carjacked vehicle more quickly than before.

"In the past, what took some time was that the victim needed to have a report number. Now the verification is made simply by [OnStar] having a conversation with the responding officer," says Chief James Craig.

For now, this new program will only benefit OnStar customers but the chief's team has already reached out to Ford SYNC, a comparable program, and they are looking to expand.

The announcement comes just days after a group of people went on a carjacking spree in the city.

The first incident happened around 5:30 a.m. at a gas station at Morang Drive and Kelly Road. The second incident happened an hour later not too far away at Seven Mile Road and Chalmers Street. At 6:35 a.m. Detroit police responded to a third carjcaking at Seven Mile Road and Hayes Street.

One of the suspects crashed the vehicle into another, sending three innocent people to the hospital.

Three arrest have been made in Wednesday's carjacking spree and police say the crew could be responsible for a fourth carjacking overnight on East Warren Avenue.
