Detroit to host 2015 Shell Eco-marathon

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Local high school and college students will compete in Houston after having built super-mileage vehicles, which can travel hundreds of miles on a single gallon of gas. But next year, the Shell Eco-marathon is coming to Detroit.

Brad Keselowski, 2012 NASCAR Spring Cup Champion, was at Cobo Hall Thurday for the big announcement.

This year, 130 teams from across the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Guatemala and Mexico are taking part April 25 - 27. The competition tests the efficiency of the vehicles, which are built from scratch.

The local teams represent University of Detroit Jesuit High School and the University of Michigan.

Unlike NASCAR with its need for speed, these vehicles move pretty slow - only about 15 mph around a six-mile track. The fuel efficiency, however, is off the charts. The winner's vehicle in Houston last year clocked in at 3,857 miles to the gallon.

Shell says our city's resilience and entrepreneurial spirit make it the perfect place to host the Eco Marathon.

About a thousand students will be in Detroit next year for the competition. The exact route to test the vehicles on the streets of Detroit is still being determined.
