Inner City Family Finds Outlet For Children In Rowing

The inner city can offer a lot of challenges but there are also not a lot of outlets for kids. The Nichols Family found one of those outlets and is not only thriving but also enjoying it.

"To me, it's not a long walk. Do it every day; I know the routine. I just keep on walking—yes, on a cold day it does get kinda frustrating because the wind is blowing in your face," says Devon Nichols. But the walk's well worth it, considering what's at the end.

After a mile and a half, the walking turns into something else. For Devante Nichols, it's rowing. "The first time I ever saw him row on the Christiana, I was like ‘man he looks good out there," says Teresa Nichols, Devante and Devon's mom. "If I didn't row, I don't know what I'd be doing right now—probably sitting at home watching TV or something," Devante says.

For Devon, it's all about socializing. "Devon is the goofy one," says Meghan, the boys' coach. "My first time on that boat, on the water I was a little scared, but I got over that fear," says Devon. As for mom, she's still working on that. "I'm not getting in that water. I'm not getting in no boats; I'm scared to get on a cruise ship," says Teresa.

Everything else though, they get from Mom. "Devante gets his arrogance—I know he gets that from me. Devon is so, so charming, and nice, and pleasant; he gets that from me," says Teresa.

And now, with the Wilmington Youth Rowing Association, they're getting even more. "It actually helped me find out what kind of person I can be in life. When I was told rowing was actually a good way to get into college, I was like ‘wow!" says Devante.

Beauty, brawn, and brain is how Teresa describes her triplets: Devon, Devante, and Deveroux—the youngest of the three, who's taking a break from the water to work on school. The nice thing about Deveroux is that we still have a connection to him because of the boys; he still comes to races to cheer on his brothers," says Meghan. But he doesn't always get off easy. "They were just arguing in the house, ‘Deveroux, you should just come to show support and show we're a team. Because whether they like it or not, they'll always be on this team!
