NYPD officer detained in India over bullets

Posted: Updated:

Neighbors at Manuel Encarnacion's Upper Manhattan apartment have wondered why they haven't seen him in weeks.

“I never knew something like this would happen to him” one neighbor said.

Mr. Encarnacion, an officer with the NYPD, was arrested at an airport in India for having bullets in his checked luggage.

He’s not allowed to leave the country as his case makes its way through India’s judicial system.

Now US Congressman Peter King is urging the State Department to get involved...

Writing a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry he expressed "grave concern" saying it is "excessive, politically motivated" payback for the arrest and strip search of an Indian diplomat in New York last December.

Encarnacion's attorney, Samarjit Pattnaik, disagrees with Congressman King.

He says it has nothing to do with “political payback”

The Attorney says Encarnacion, who works out of the 25th precinct, visited a shooting range in New York before traveling to India to be with his wife & simply forgot the bullets in a jacket.

“He was only carrying 3 live bullets without the gun itself" the lawyer said.

The case will be back before a judge later this month when attorneys hope to have the charges thrown out and Encarnacion on a flight back home.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
