Salina losing national JUCO tournament

Posted: Updated:

SALINA, Kan. (AP) - After 2015, Salina will no longer host a national junior college basketball tournament that the city has hosted for nearly two decades.

Officials say the city is losing the National Junior College Athletic Association's Division I Women's Basketball National Championship tournament. The NJCAA championship events committee gave the tournament to Lubbock, Texas, for 2016 to 2018.

The Salina Journal reports in 2015, the event will be staged for the 18th straight year at the Salina Bicentennial Center. The events in Salina bring in about $600,000 a year and attract 10,000 to 12,000 to the Bicentennial Center.

Salina officials say they'd still like to host other NJCAA events.
