Exhibit Sheds New Light On African-American History

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. -

The movie "12 Years A Slave" just was an Oscar for Best Picture, telling the true, graphic story of a man sold into slavery. And an incredible collection now on display at the Atlanta History Center brings stories like that to life through art, documents, and artifacts.

The Kinsey Collection is in Atlanta for the first time ever, and is on display now through July 13th. The collection is a labor of love of the Kinsey family -- Bernard and Shirley, and their son Khalil -- who collected the items for more than 35 years. Those items include the first known black baptismal record (from 1595), female slave shackles, and an original, first-edition copy of Simon Northrup's book "12 Years A Slave" -- which inspired the film of the same name. Though it's not always an easy collection to look at, Khalil Kinsey says it tells the "forgotten" story of African-Americans who helped build our nation, and will shatter many myths about the role of African-American in history.

Good Day Atlanta's Paul Milliken got a preview of The Kinsey Collection, presented by Wells Fargo -- click on the video above to check it out. And don't forget to take advantage of the Wells Fargo Free Admission Weekends, on the third full weekend of each month.
