4 people now in custody after Detroit mob attack on man

DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit police say they have arrested two more men in connection with the severe mob beating of a Macomb Co. motorist who had accidentally hit a 10-year-old boy who stepped in front of his truck.

Police say a 30-year-old man was arrested Sunday night and a 24-year-old on Monday afternoon. That brings to four the number arrested in the assault of 54-year-old Steve Utash.

Wayne Co. Prosecutor Kym Worthy says Bruce Edward Wimbush, Jr., 17, faces charges of Assault with Intent to Murder and Assault with Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm. He was arraigned Wednesday morning.

Another teen arrested Saturday, identified as 16-year-old Courtney Robinson, was charged Monday in juvenile court with Assault with Intent to Murder. A juvenile court referee says he tested positive for marijuana when he was arrested Saturday. Worthy says her office has several days remaining to determine whether to charge Robinson as an adult.

Utash, 54, of Clinton Township, struck the boy on Morang Street near Balfour Street April 2. A mob swarmed him as he checked the boy, who has been treated for a leg injury.

Utash remains in the hospital in critical condition in a medically induced coma.

Meanwhile, police and prosecutors continue to investigate "with a sense of urgency" according to Detroit Police Chief James Craig. "We're going to arrest you," he promises.

Authorities are also considering if the beating was a hate crime.

"We are looking at all aspects. That's one issue, the issue of race, is being looked at," says Craig.

Utash is white; Detroit is more than 80 percent black.

Utash's family said more than $120,000 has been raised for his medical bills. The tree trimmer has no medical insurance.
