Police Officers In Deptford Township Honored For Their Service

Police officers in Deptford Township who dedicate their lives in the line of fire received a big honor on Monday night.

The officers were saluted for their outstanding service, not only fighting crime, but helping the community as well.

Fox 29's Jennifer Joyce reports.

Three police officers took center stage as stars of Monday's township council meeting where they received awards for their stand out service in the police department in 2013.

"It's great honor. It's real important to me because I was put in through the guys that I work for and also the guys that work for me," Sgt. Joseph Smith said.

Sgt. Joseph Smith took home Supervisor of the Year. Officer Eric Strouse, a drug awareness officer for the township, received the Officer of the Year award. He had a strong show of support from the people who know him best, his students.

"Just to have all these kids out and see how much they appreciate what I do, and I love what I do, Officer Strouse said.

Fellow officer Rudy Ruiz was awarded for making a difference on the streets.

Ruiz has 15 years as a Sergeant First Class in the US military. He served in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan.

"I'm very fortunate, I'm able to be first responder, and be the front line that protects and serves this community," Officer Ruiz said.

The Deptford Township police chief says he has received the greatest award of all because he has these police officers on his team.
