Hundreds celebrate Easter at St. Patricks Cathedral

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Although it technically wasn't Sunday yet, hundreds of people went to Saturday's Mass at St. Patricks Cathedral to celebrate Easter, one of the holiest days for Christians around the world.

Easter Vigil Mass marks the first official celebration of the resurrection of Jesus.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan presided over Saturdays mass at St. Patrick’s cathedral wearing a brightly colored robe.

"Stir up in your church a spirit of adoption, so that renewed body and mind remain undivided in service" Dolan said.

The altar was also adorned with vibrant flowers and cloths.

All of it symbolizes the Christian holiday as a rebirth and renewal.

Hundreds of Christians filled the cathedral and lit candles, a symbol that Jesus is the light of the world..

“This is what we came here to do, to celebrate Easter here” said one man.

The Branco family came all the way from Massachusetts to attend Mass at St. Patrick’s.

They said they couldn't imagine celebrating Easter any other way.

“You always hear about it and now were actually here” said Ms. Branco. “This is a once lifetime, Easter Mass here.”

Easter services will also be held Sunday.

Happy Easter everyone.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
