Thieves posing as federal agents getting into homes

Posted: Updated:
STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (WJBK) - Authorities are investigating two recent events of strangers getting into homes by posing as federal agents. In one of the incidents the strangers took property.

The most recent incident occurred on May 6 in the 37,000 block of Hacker St., near Metropolitan Parkway and Mound Road.

Layla Asoufe tells FOX 2's Amy Lange her family woke up to three men with long guns ringing their doorbell and yelling to be let inside. The men were wearing all black and had FBI shirts. Asoufe also says she saw at least one of the men have a badge of some sort.

She says the men told her they wanted to check all the homes but she demanded a search warrant. They said they were looking for a family member but a niece told them she recognized one of the men from a photo on social media.

Police say the men ran away then and got into a full-size black SUV, possibly a Cadillac Escalade with tinted windows.

The second incident occurred on April 20th in the 3,000 block of Cherry Creek Lane.

In this incident, two men were wearing ATF shirts. They gained entry to the home saying they had a search warrant, but police say they did not show any written document or show ID. They took cash, a handgun and cell phones and left in a white SUV, possibly a Suburban or Yukon.

Sterling Heights Police and federal authorities are investigating these separate incidents. They say although the two incidents are similar it is unknown if they are related.

Police say if you have any question about anyone at your door call 911.
