Crews work to fix sinkhole on Detroit's west side

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -
A hazard for drivers on Detroit's west side, another big sinkhole has opened up on the road. This one is at Carlin and Tireman. Crews are working to keep the big hole from getting worse.

It's about 10 feet wide and it measures roughly 15 feet deep. The ground gave way on Carlin St. Sunday and neighbors like Charles Thomas saw it coming. Detroit's Department of Public Works put asphalt on top of the uneven ground a few days ago, likely unaware of what was happening beneath the surface. Sunday, the street caved in. A neighbor initially blocked off the area with reflectors and caution tape to keep drivers away. We called the mayor's office and they responded with a crew from the Water and Sewerage Department.

Alonzo Norwood believes heavy dump trucks traveling through an alley onto Carlin may have loosened a water main underground.

"I don't know how much weight the trucks are but that's a lot of weight coming in here," he said. "They usually have that, see that sign where it says no trucks? So, hey, I don't know."

Neighbors hope something is done before the looming rainfall makes the hole even worse.

Water has been shut off to thousands of Detroit residents in recent months. Despite protests, more shutoffs are expected. So, what about water that's running non-stop inside abandoned homes? Soon there will be a new way to stop that, too.
