Twin carries injured sister across finish line during track meet

Posted: Updated:
TRENTON, IL. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- An Illinois girl showed spectators at a state track meet the importance sportsmanship and compassion after she carried her injured twin sister over the finish line.

Chloe and Claire Gruenke spent this weekend competing at the southern Illinois state track meet. The twins were both running the 800-meter race when Chloe could no longer run.

"I felt something pull and pop in my thigh and then around the second lap it hurt and I couldn`t go anymore and I fell to the ground," Chloe explained.

Claire saw her injured sister and ran into action.

"Claire came up behind me and put me on her back and then we finished," said Chloe.

They finished together. Claire carried her sister for 370 of the remaining 400 meters, almost an entire lap around the track. She says what she did for her sister had meaning.

"Showing compassion, love and sportsmanship, like even if you lose and help somebody its still worth it," Claire said. "The energy from the crowd made me stronger."

The twins' father is not surprised by Claire's selfless action.

"It was pretty neat, everyone in the crowd was standing up giving a standing ovation," Doug Gruenke said.

Claire and Chloe's coach said the spectators looked on breathlessly, some had tears in their eyes.

While they came in last, the twins definitely won the hearts of everyone who watched the special moment.
