Cape woman dies after giving birth to twins

Posted: Updated:

POCASSET, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – New mother Lee Mannillo, 41, was waked in Falmouth Wednesday. And this small, tight knit community is now rallying around her husband, who is now the sole caregiver for the couples' newborn infants.

She brought not one but two lives into this world, only to have hers taken away the next day. Mannillo, 41, of Pocasset, died May 8 at Brigham and Women's Hospital from complications following the birth of her twin sons, Van and Nicholas.

The twins are said to be doing well. A YouCaring fundraiser page has been set-up to help Mannillo's husband, Rich, and the twins. More than 600 supporters have commented on the page and donated money, including one of the twins' NICU nurses who wrote: “Have cared for these boys and their story is one that is filled with utter disparity over the loss of such a young beautiful mother, and of the miracle she brought forth before her passing. Keeping all of the family in my heart. These boys are a precious gift and I'm sure their mom is watching over them.”

Mannillo worked for 12 years as an environmental coordinator at the Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment. She is being remembered for both her work there and the positive energy she brought to her job.

Former intern Emily Coyne wrote, "I worked with Lee when I was a summer intern at the county years ago, I always enjoyed being around her with her spunky, bubbly personality, she had such a zest for life. I am so sorry for your loss and I can't imagine what a hole she will leave in all aspects of her life. I hope you find comfort in the fact that she is most certainly an angel and will always watch over you and the boys."

And friends of Mannillo say, above all it is “Lee's beauty and smile [that] will always be remembered.”

A service is scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home in West Falmouth. A memorial fund has been set up in her name at the TD Bank in Pocasset. And that YouCaring website has already raised more than $70,000 of the $150,000 they hope to raise for her twins and husband. You can donate here.
