102-year-old woman takes laps around race track with Mario Andretti

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A 102-year-old woman from Indiana recently took laps around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a racing legend for the second time in less than 10 years.

Mario Andretti was at the wheel, while Edith Pittenger sat in the passenger seat Tuesday.

At times, they reached speeds of 180 miles per hour. Most people would think that's fast enough, but Edith said she was hoping to reach 200 miles per hour.

"He didn't slow down around those corners, that's what surprised me," said Pittenger.

"I know people in their 70s and 80s who, I mean they're bedridden, and they can't get around or hardly do anything, but I mean my goodness she's 102 and she's going 180 miles an hour at least in a race car," said Garett Cates, Edith's grandson.

The 102-year-old has been a thrill-seeker for quite some time and she hasn't showed any signs of slowing down. She recalled driving her first car when she was just 12.

"I would just jump in the car and the kids would ride on the running board and we'd go around the reformatory that's down at Pendleton where I was born," said Edith.

Edith rode around the track with Arie Luyendyk Jr. in 2008. On her 100th birthday, she went parasailing.
