Lawrence prom canceled after students participate in 'senior skip day'

Posted: Updated:

LAWRENCE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The dresses, the tuxes were all picked out as Lawrence seniors got ready for the prom; until their school took it away.

The kids say, it's all because they took part in what they call a time-honored tradition: senior skip day. Parents say the kids skipped school Thursday and came back to learn they were no longer allowed to go to their prom, that they raised thousands of dollars for.

"They're not gonna be able to participate in prom? I just find it ridiculous," parent Virginia Gomez said.

With just two weeks left until senior prom parents and students at a Lawrence high school are outraged, saying the dean unfairlycanceledd the big dance.

Parent Rafael Garcia says he got a call from the dean of Notre Dame Cristo Rey High School Thursday. The dean told him the prom wascanceledd because more than half of school's 64 seniors took part in a skip day on May 15. Garcia's daughter Alejandra was one of them.

"We're seniors, we worked so hard we've gotten into college we've done everything," she said.

Alejandra says students drove an hour to Pentucket Way, a lake in N.H., for a planned senior skip day. She says they were warned not to skip, but did it anyway.

"On Wednesday, our dean of students he came and he was like 'oh you guys better not be planning a skip day because I won’t let you guys graduate.’ But it was like such a big group of us that we're like it’s impossible for him to cancel graduation," she said.

Other students say they raised thousands of dollars for the prom, and were told while the dance is now closed to seniors, the dean is allowing younger students to go instead.

"The announcement made in school was juniors and sophomores were gonna be taking the money and we're like 'wefund raisedd this money,'" one student said.

Some parents say they agree the students who skipped should be punished to some degree, perhaps with a make-up day at the end of the year. And if the dean doesn't change his mind, they hope their kids will be reimbursed for the money they've already raised and spent.

FOX 25 tried several times over the phone and in person to try and talk to the dean, but so far we have yet to hear back from him.
