SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A 23-year-old Springfield man was fatally shot in the Forest Park neighborhood overnight, and a woman with him injured.
Police said Darrell Jenkins was dead at the scene of the 12:45 a.m. Wednesday shooting on Kensington Avenue. The 20-year-old woman was shot in the mouth and collapsed nearby after trying to run away. She is hospitalized but expected to survive. Police say the shootings are connected to gangs, but the victims weren't gang members.
In an unrelated incident, a 26-year-old man was shot from a car as rode a bicycle in the Bay neighborhood just after midnight. He was able to ride to his uncle's home and was taken to a hospital. He also is expected to survive.
Police spokesman Sgt. John Delaney said the attacks aren't random but they plan to increase patrols.
