Stoneham firefighters uncover 480 marijuana plants while responding to fire

Posted: Updated:
STONEHAM, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Stoneham emergency crews reportedly found a marijuana growing operation Wednesday while responding to a building fire.

Police received a call just before 7 a.m. about smoke coming from the second floor of 10 Hersham St. Firefighters responded and quickly put out the fire. One firefighter sustained minor injuries.

Once the fire was out, investigators say crews saw what appeared to be marijuana plants throughout the apartment, roughly 480 in total, the Stoneham police chief said. That may have produced as much as $2 million worth in sales, the AP reported. Stoneham police detectives and the Drug Enforcement Administration were called in to aid the investigation.

No one was home when firefighters arrived at the scene. Police are looking for a 35-year-old man who may have lived there, officials say.

There is no word on what caused the fire or if any arrests have been made. The investigation remains ongoing.
