Everett police officer accused of beating 10-year-old son

EVERETT, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A 32-year-old Everett police officer was arraigned Friday amid allegations that he beat his 10-year-old son.

Jermaine Bellard, 32, of Saugus, is charged with one count of assault and battery on a child with injury. Investigators allege Bellard struck his son multiple times with a belt because the 10-year-old had gotten into trouble at school.

Bellard's wife and family sat in court Friday while Prosecutor Mark Byron outlined the case, telling the judge that Bellard hit his son 14 times with a belt.

"For this victim, one strike was not enough, two strikes was not enough. Rather 14 strikes," Byron said.

Bellard was appointed to the police department just over two years ago. He lives in Saugus with his wife and two other children. The 10-year-old victim in this case, is a child from a previous relationship.

Prosecutors say the boy's mother picked him up after school, and the boy revealed bruises. At the hospital, an ER doctor and nurse both noted purple bruises and welts on the boy's buttocks and lower back. According to the prosecutor, the boy said his father hit him.

"He stated his father had him lay down on the bed face down, and he beat him with a belt, hitting him 14 times. He told police the reason he was hit with the belt was because the school called home, spoke to the defendant before you, Mr. Jermaine Bellard, that he was being disruptive in class," Byron said.

Bellard was released on $1,000 bail and must stay away from his son and the child's mother.

"My client is a very good father who cares about his family, this is an unfortunate event. We'll address it in court at the appropriate time, on the appropriate day. But he's been a good father, good police officer over the years," Defense Attorney Thomas Kennedy said.

Bellard is due back in court in August.
