63-Year Old Woman Uses Back Scratcher To Fight Off Intruder

MARION, IN -

A Central Indiana woman uses a back scratcher and a wrench to fight off an intruder, but get this the woman is disabled!

FOX'S Kendall Downing has her story.

She’s 63 and on oxygen, but Patty Kearney was determined not to become a victim.

“I have COPD, lung cancer,” she said, “Guy had a hockey mask on and I almost started laughing.”

Kearney and her husband were watching television around 9:30 on Monday night, when they heard a crash in the back room. Her husband went to check it out.

“I had stood up at that point. I was going to go out there and ask him what was going on, and I saw him backing up, out of the back porch with his hands in the air saying please don’t hurt us,” she said.

Kearney said the next few moments were tense. The burglar had a wrench, asked about a gun, and demanded money. But when she figured out the crook didn’t have a gun, it was game on.

“I’m going to fight,” she said.

Kearney grabbed a back scratcher and kept hitting the burglar until the man dropped the wrench. She picked it up and forced him out, eventually hitting the man in the head with the wrench multiple times, according to her. She said he left bleeding.

“I said not in my house, not in my house, and I boom, boom, boom,” she said, “I just hit him in the head, hit him in the head, hit him until he got right there, and I hit him once more and he ran out the door.”

The man ran away, lucky for him, because Kearney said she wasn’t going to stop.

“If he hadn’t have got out that back door, I’d have beat him to death. And I know I would’ve because I was that mad at that person in my house for doing this to me,” she said.

With her sense of security gone, Kearney said she’s proud for what she did, defending her home against an unwanted guest.

“Somebody invaded my house,” she said.

Marion Police did collect evidence at the scene. They are trying to identify a suspect, but the man is still out there.

Patty and her husband had a security system installed. She said she’s keeping the wrench close, too.
