Staff sergeant reunites with bomb-sniffing dog he served with in Afghanistan

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (MyFoxBoston.com) --  A soldier reunited with the four-legged friend he fought beside in Afghanistan after an outpouring of support on the Internet.

Staff Sgt. Andy Wolf had not seen Iras, a German Shepherd, in more than two years prior to their reunion Thursday. The bomb-sniffing dog worked alongside Wolf in more than 100 combat missions. Wolf said during one mission, Iras smelled an IED beneath a bridge they were parked on. He credited the dog for saving many lives.

"The amount of time and what we went through together, there's nothing to explain what you feel," said Wolf of his bond with Iras.

The pair were inseparable during their two tours in Afghanistan. Even when Iras got hurt, he was flown to Germany and lost his spleen. After Wolf's tour, he returned home to his family and Iras stayed for another tour.

When Iras retired, he remained in Germany, but Wolf's brother set up a GoFundMe account in hopes of reuniting them. The account raised $7,200.

Iras ran straight to Wolf when he landed in North Carolina Thursday. He will live in Wolf's home in Fayetteville, N.C. Staff Sgt. Wolf planned to grill the dog a big steak as his first meal home.
