NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com / AP) -- Former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez, who has been charged with the murder of three people, spent a brief stint in the hospital Saturday.
Bristol County Sheriff Tom Hodgson confirmed Sunday that Hernandez was taken to St. Luke's Hospital briefly Saturday morning, and then was returned to jail within an hour
Hodgson did not say what medical issue caused Hernandez to need to be brought the hospital, but added that it was not due to a fight or altercation.
Last week, Hernandez's lawyers filed a request to transfer the former tight end to a jail closer to Boston, citing safety and other concerns.
Friday, Hernandez's Boston-based attorneys said they have to travel too far to meet him at the Bristol County jail.
And the lawyers say they can't always talk privately with Hernandez, who has pleaded not guilty to three murder charges in separate cases in Boston and Bristol County. The lawyers also say allegations Hernandez was involved in a jailhouse altercation are another reason to transfer him.
Hernandez will appear again in court Tuesday for a status hearing related to charges from the 2012 double murder prosecutors allege he committed.
