Grieving son waits months for mother's headstone

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -  Dante Prophet of Detroit stares at his mother's grave - but there's no headstone to visit after eight long months.

"She made sure she had everything situated for, you know, when her time came, and for them to do this to her? It's hard," he says.

His mother lost her battle with cancer September 30.

She was buried at Detroit Memorial Park Cemetery on October 12. Prophet paid nearly $8,000 up front and $3,500 was for a personalized headstone.

"She told me six to eight weeks, and I talked to her again and she was like they was [sic] having a problem with the type of base that I ordered," he says.

That was back in November.

Since then, he says he has been getting the run around and has asked for his money back to get his own headstone for his mother.

"'Will I be able to get my money back?' Her reply to me was, 'I don't know,'" he says. "I called back, left a message on her voicemail and she hasn't returned the call."

Fed up, he called Fox 2 for help. He and Fox 2's Erika Erickson went looking for answers Friday.

The supervisor they spoke with apologized for what Prophet is going through and said she doesn't understand what happened. She also says Prophet will be receiving a check for that headstone so he can go purchase one himself.

As the question of why it took so long remains unanswered, for now Prophet is just grateful he can soon lay flowers next to his mother's name.
