Car recovered from pond along I-94 in Roseville

Posted: Updated:
ROSEVILLE, Mich. (WJBK) -  The call came around 5 a.m. Tuesday.

"There's a person standing in the water flashing a flashlight screaming, 'Help!'," the 911 caller tells dispatch.

A 40-year-old woman lost control of her 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee while headed westbound on Interstate 94 and drove about 30 feet into the Marsack's retention pond.

"She was only in water up to about five feet but she couldn't swim and she didn't know how deep the water was, so you can imagine how frustrating and scary that is," says Roseville Fire Chief Mike Holland.

She broke the sunroof to get out of the water-logged SUV. Roseville firefighters rescued the woman soon after.

State police say the woman claims a semi truck hit her sometime during the storm causing her to lose control of her vehicle. There did not appear to be any damage to it, and even though there were empty beer bottles inside the SUV investigators do not believe alcohol played a role in the accident.

"She was in stable condition. We did transport her to the hospital," says Holland.

Reportedly dazed from the crash and her cellphone drenched and inoperable, Holland says the driver could have been in even more trouble if she did not have a flashlight to get the attention of passersby.

"It's important to try to be prepared because you never know what's going to happen. I'm sure this lady didn't anticipate she was going to be in a pond," says Holland.

Holland says the woman was just 20 to 30 feet away from a shelf in the pond where the body of water's depth drops significantly.

State troopers say they won't be able to look for the semi truck the driver claims hit her because she cannot provide a description of it.
