Suspect in custody after Allen Park chase ends in Ypsilanti

YPSILANTI, Mich. (WJBK) -- Police say a man is in custody after leading Allen Park squads cars on a chase ending in Ypsilanti.

Police say a man and his ex-girlfriend has an altercation in a parking lot near Allen Road and Champagne Road around 3 a.m. Thursday.  The man allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend in the chest, before trying to drag her to his car.

Police say the woman fought him and screamed.  When neighbors heard her cries for help, they called police.

When police arrived the man was already gone.

Around 7 a.m., an off-duty officer was heading home when he spotted the suspect's vehicle.  The off-duty officer followed the vehicle until a patrol car could get there.

Once the uniformed officer arrived, he attempted to conduct a traffic stop, which is when the chase began on Southfield Road.

The suspect led police onto I-94 westbound.  When he reach Ypsilanti, the suspect attempted to turn around to head eastbound, when he lost control and crashed.

The suspect was taken to the hospital, where he is in stable condition.  Police say the woman is expected to be okay.

No officers were injured in the crash.

    48-year-old Keith Andersen retired in February from the Grosse Pointe Park Police Department. On June 21, he was involved in a roll over accident where he suffered a broken neck. As of now Keith has no movement in his the lower half of his body. The Fraternal Order of Police, Grosse Pointe Lodge 102 is holding a fundraiser for Keith on Aug 5th.
