Scene cleared at Lawrence home after Hazmat response

Posted: Updated:
LAWRENCE, Mass. ( / AP) -- Officials in Lawrence cleared the scene Sunday after responding to reports of chemicals and a possible pipe bomb at a home on Exchange Street.

The Lawrence police and fire departments responded to 200 Exchange St. Sunday morning, after receiving reports of unknown chemicals and possible explosive materials at the address.

The incident began when police went to the house to recover weapons, after a mother who was cleaning out her deceased son's home found guns and asked for police help to remove them. On the premises they found the chemicals and what could have been pipe bombs.

Daniel Stadleman, 40, died in May. His death was not considered suspicious.

Just before noon a Tier 2 Hazmat response had been initiated to deal with the situation. A Tier 2 response includes a full tech and bomb squad response. The State Police bomb squad and members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated inside the home.

No bombs were found, but a fuse and powders were found on the scene. Numerous firearms, ammunition and a crossbow were also removed from the house. Officials began clearing the scene at around 1:45 p.m. Sunday.

"All of a sudden the bomb squad showed up, and Hazmat pulled up," said neighbor Adam Legare. "Then I tried to walk back, and they wouldn't let me back."

Police evacuated homes around the area as a precaution.

Methuen police also responded the scene. Methuen Police Chief Joe Solomon said it did not appear that Stadleman was involved in bomb-making, though the materials found "are consistent with the materials that would be used in bomb-making."
