MIT student circumnavigating the world headed back to the U.S.

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com)- MIT student Matt Guthmiller is finally flying back to America as he closes the final leg of his mission to be the youngest person to circumnavigate the world.

After a month and a half of traveling, Guthmiller is headed to San Diego to complete his record, but some troubling weather in the Pacific Ocean is postponing his long journey back home. He is currently in Pago Pago, American Samoa waiting for the weather to clear up before flying out.

Guthmiller spent some time in Cairo and Abu Dhabi and had some maintenance done to his plane in Lumpur before taking off to Manila and Australia. He said his trip to Abu Dhabi was the trickiest stop he has had so far.

The MIT student landed in Darwin, Australia on July 5. During an interview with an Australian news station, Guthmiller said he wanted to inspire other people to do something big through his mission.

“Biggest thing I am hoping to accomplish is to go out and inspire other people to try really big things like flying solo around the world,” Guthmiller said. “Whether that’s trying to beat my record once I set it or having an idea and going out and starting a company. Just something big.”

Guthmiller must make it back to the United States before July 24 in order to break the world record.  He began his trip on May 31 and has visited over eight cities.

Proceeds from his project will be donated to Code.org, a non-profit working to expand computer science education in schools.
