NE Unsolved Exclusive: New surveillance photos in Charlene Holmes murder

Posted: Updated:
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- For two years, the heartless killer of a popular 16-year-old Cambridge girl has escaped justice.

But now, Cambridge Police Detectives are turning to Fox 25's New England's Unsolved with new evidence they hope will break open this frustrating case.

On June 3, 2012, at about 8 p.m., Charlene Holmes was shot and killed just a few feet away from her home on Willow Street. Charlene had stopped at a neighbor's front porch to talk to a friend, when shots were fired from a passing car.

The shooter and the car have never been identified. But Cambridge Police are exclusively releasing to Fox 25's New England's Unsolved surveillance photos of the car the killer used the night Charlene was fatally shot.

Cambridge Police Deputy Superintendent Paul Ames tells me surveillance video shows the suspect car circling Charlene's Willow Street block once before Charlene arrived. When the car returned, someone shot at the front porch where Charlene was standing, moments after Charlene arrived.

Deputy Superintendent Ames tells me he believes the gunman was targeting someone else on the porch, and that Charlene was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"Whoever was in that car was looking for their target. For them to go by that house once, identify who they were looking for, they came back around. And in that unfortunate timing, that's when Charlene came around. She had no history of violence, no history of crime, she was a wonderful person, well loved in the community by the school, friends, she is clearly the victim here," Dep. Supt. Ames told me.

The senseless murder of Charlene Holmes continues to strike a nerve in Cambridge. On June 3, 2014, two years after Charlene's murder, hundreds filled the streets near Charlene's home, demanding justice.

Take a good look at the surveillance photos. Maybe you recognize the car. Maybe you've heard someone talking about the Charlene's murder. Maybe you know something.
