Teen facing arson charges after Beverly fire

Posted: Updated:
BEVERLY, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A 19-year-old man is facing arson charges for his alleged connection to a fire in Beverly.

Zachary H. Pavia, of Beverly, is charged with 10 counts of arson of a dwelling, 13 counts of destruction of property over $250, breaking and entering in night time for a felony, and trespassing.

Two other boys, ages 15 and 17, will also be summonsed and charged with accessory before the fact, breaking and entering in nighttime with the intent to commit a felony, and trespassing. Their names were not released because they are juveniles.

The fire broke out at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday at 36 Folger Avenue. It then spread to several adjacent homes. No one was injured.

Officials determined the fire was intentionally set Monday afternoon. They initially deemed the fire suspicious because the home where it began was vacant.

The DA says Pavia told two friends that he was responsible for starting the fire.

"He had told them he had set the fire that had burned several homes at the end of Folger Ave.," the DA said.

Justin Towey is one of the two friends Pavia told.

"He told me he used a torch to burn the house down," Towey said.

The DA says Pavia and his two juvenile friends entered a house under construction on Folger Avenue, lit a join and then Pavia lit a blow torch he found upstairs.

"The defendant came out behind them with a blow torch and asked for a lighter," the DA said.

Pavia's friends said he thought the fire was funny and "just kind of laughed about it."

"He just kind of laughed about it,"

Two homes were destroyed by the fire and six others were damaged. A nearby car was also destroyed. The residents of one home were not able to return after the fire.

Community residents say they are relieved that Pavia is in custody.

Folger Avenue resident Sarah Kim says she can finally relax, and Michelle Roy agrees.

"This has caused a lot of damage, people displaced. So I am very happy they caught the perpetrators," Roy said.

Pavia was arraigned on 10 counts of arson Thursday and is being held without bail. He is due back in court on July 25.
