Royal Oak jewelry store to give earrings to girl getting new ear after she was attacked by a raccoon

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WJBK) - It's been a week of recovery for a 12-year-old west Michigan girl after she went through a major surgery, but when she's ready for visitors a local jeweler has something special that will make her smile.

Beaumont Hospital is Charlotte's home away from home. This is where doctors started the process of rebuilding the right side of her face.

A raccoon attack left Charlotte disfigured when she was just a baby. After building her a new nose, cheek and upper lip, doctors decided it was time to create an ear.

Rib cartilage was used to make the ear, then it was inserted under the skin in her arm where it grew a skin mold for three months. It took about eight hours of surgery to remove the ear from her arm and place it on her head.

Before the surgery, Charlotte told me what she was most looking forward to: getting earrings.

When Katie heard Charlotte say those words, she knew what she wanted to do. Her family owns the Miner's Den jewelry store in Royal Oak.

Some earrings and other goodies will be delivered soon to Charlotte. Fox 2 will be there when it happens.

In the meantime, if you want to send Charlotte earrings or anything else as a show of support, please send it to: Charlotte's P.O. Box is 397 Fruitport, MI 49415.
