NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The NYPD begins a crackdown on Wednesday of bicycle riders not following the rules of the road.

Operation Safe Cycle will focus on the following:

Failure to stop at a red light, disobey a traffic signal or sign, riding the wrong direction against traffic, riding on the sidewalk, and failure to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

Cops will also focus on motorists who obstruct bicycle lanes, which creates a hazardous condition for bicyclists.

The NYPD is asking anyone who rides a bicycle and drives in the City to make safety a priority.

The two-week long initiative ends Aug. 26.

If you do hit the pavement on two wheels, you are among approximately 40 million bicycle riders in the United States. New York City alone has more than 250 miles of bike lanes.

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

No riding on the sidewalk

Use 'door zone' -- keep a car's door's distance from the car in front of you

Ride in a straight line

Keep all traffic rules

Don't cut in front of people

It is not mandatory to wear a helmet in NYC, but it's highly recommended
