Frates, Griffin families appear at special ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Posted: Updated:
QUINCY, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A parking lot in Quincy was blanketed by buckets Monday as people there prepared to take part in one of the biggest Ice Bucket Challenges yet - all of them cheered on by some very special guests.

It may also have been one of the most emotional Ice Bucket Challenges yet.

What started as a company-wide event took an unexpected turn and brought two families together.

"We've got about a thousand bags of ice and God knows how many buckets," one organizer said.

Between 1,200 to 1,500 people showed up as Granite Telecommunications employees took an Ice Bucket Challenge like no one has ever seen.

As the crowd gathered, the man who started it all, Pete Frates, who's been battling ALS, was there to deliver a personal message.

His father John read it.

"It is with a heavy heart that I am here today," he said.

Heavy because Pete's friend Corey Griffin died after he drowned on Nantucket over the weekend.

Corey helped set the whole fundraising challenge up.

"Corey has been a member of team FrateTrain since the very beginning," John Frates said. "Corey Griffin spent his last days making this donation a reality. Please be sure to send your love to the Griffin family during their time of need.

Griffin's family arrived and met the Frates family for the first time.

Corey's father said it's a blessing to be here and witness what his son helped create.

The Griffin family and friends all took the challenge together. In the end, Granite Telecommunications donated $200,000 to ALS research; $100,000 from the company, and $100,000 in Corey's name.
