Route 3 partially shut after fatal crash in Duxbury

Posted: Updated:

DUXBURY, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Route 3 southbound was partially reopened late Sunday afternoon after a fatal car crash led emergency responders to close it completely.

The crash happened just before 3 p.m. Sunday between exits 10 and 11. The vehicle involved in the single-car crash caught fire, also starting a small brush fire in the area. The Duxbury Fire Department arrived to extinguish the flames.

Police said it a 34-year-old woman was alone in the car when it crashed. They did not release her name or any information on what might have caused the crash, but said she was pronounced dead at the scene.

State police were on scene assisting Duxbury police and fire departments. At first, Route 3 southbound was completely shut and all traffic was being diverted to exit 11, but by 4:30 p.m., one travel lane and the breakdown lane were open for cars to pass through.

At that time, police reported that traffic was backed up all the way to Braintree.

Police officers and other first responders were expected to be on the scene for "an extended time," the Duxbury Fire Department Public Information Officer tweeted.
